So… what is your story?

You’ve got one, you know. It’s sitting right there, just behind your corneas.

I say that because in many ways, your story works exactly like the lens in your eye. Every beam of light in your world passes through it.

And as those lightbeams pass through, they are colored… shaped… sharpened… polished… buffed… sanctified.

Your story tells you what happened. It also tells you why it happened. It tells you what you can do about what happened. It tells you who is responsible for what happened. It tells you how much you need to worry about what happened. More than anything, your story helps you shape and then take a relationship to the thing that happened.

So, what is your story?

And while we’re at it, let’s ask this: how well have you taken care of your story?

Have you poked it? Prodded it? Examined it? Turned it over and over in your hand and studied it closely?

Did you write your own story? Or did you take one that was passed down to you by your ancestors?

How strong is your story? Is it waterproof? Bulletproof? Earthquake proof?

Do you believe your story? Can you make me believe it?

Does your story energize you? Point you in the right direction?

How true is your story? Sorry… that’s a trick question. Withdrawn.

Are you willing to share your story with others… whether invited to or not?

And just in case you’re wondering, the answer is YES. You do have a story. It might be buried deeply down there somewhere inside in a place so dusty and cobweb-filled you haven’t visited there in years. Or it might be right there… at the tip of your tongue, just waiting to pop out.

But you definitely DO have a story.

OK. Since you asked, here is my story…

My life exists today in a universe that was created by an infinitely loving, infinitely powerful Being. I choose to call that Being God. My life – exactly like the lives of every human being who has ever lived – is a very particular expression of God’s infinite love. I (like every sentient being who has ever lived) came into existence with a unique and unrepeatable set of abilities, a unique and unrepeatable understanding of my world, and a (nearly) unlimited capacity to give shape, texture, and meaning to the world around me.

The same God who created me created everything else that exists now, has ever existed, or ever will exist. They/we were all created as an act of creative, self-sacrificing LOVE. I also believe that I – just like every person who has ever lived or who ever will live – am endowed with human-sized versions of two of God’s defining qualities, the capacity for LOVE and the capacity for CREATIVITY

Finally, I believe I am fulfilling the purpose of my life when I am most fully embodying those two divinely defining qualities.

I feel as if I must be leaving something out, but that, as they say in show biz, just about wraps it up.

So… friend and reader of this blog post… I will ask again: what is YOUR story?

Abundant blessings;

My blog is my story, Russ. Or part of it. I’m guessing someday we will all be telling our God stories for all eternity.
